Mark Gottfried: Practice Planning for Basketball

No matter what level you coach, Mark Gottfried believes that practice planning is a key to success. Sharing his philosophy and drills, he demonstrates a typical practice at Alabama. Each practice begins with individual work, perimeter and post, on both ends of the floor. He shows two favorite warm-up drills - wing denial drill and the 2-on-2 close out drill. Each day he introduces a new concept when their minds are fresh and focused. In this segment, out of bounds plays and special plays are put together piece by piece. Gottfried moves to offensive concepts and demonstrates a wingback cut for a lay-up or a short bank shot. Defensively, shell defensive work is an everyday emphasis for 15 minutes. Because the drill has dozens of features to it, the drill can be changed for specific teaching each day. Flare screens, cross screens and down screens can be added for game preparation purposes. Every third day, Gottfried works on "Annie Over" and power lay-ins. This drill is a conditioner and demands good concentration. A toughness drill involves two players attempting to rebound the same ball and finish. This drill progresses to 2-on-2, 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 with blocking out the focus. Gottfried shares a favorite shooting drill that is simple and produces lots of shots. This DVD presents an excellent mixture of belief systems, practice structure and practice ideas and drills!
