with Jim Larranaga,University of Miami Head Coach;2012-13 AP National Coach of the Year;former George Mason University Head Coach; 2006 Final Four
Jim Larranaga outlines the components of George Mason basketball and why this foundation is so important to the bigger picture. A staple of his winning program is the eight C's; character, competitiveness, competence, consistency, cohesiveness, commitment, communication and confidence. When teaching the game to his players, Coach Larranaga uses a four step process; demonstration, imitation, correction and repetition. Additional teaching categories include guarding an open player, defensive transition and defensive philosophy. Larranaga shows and explains many drills that are part of his daily practices. The second part of Larranaga's instruction focuses on defense. The main George Mason defense is man-to-man, with the scramble as a secondary defense. A combination of the two is a series of zones that he calls the Camouflage, which is used strategically as a surprise defense that forces the offense to react to the defense. Once the opponent gets used to a man-to-man and the scramble, the Camouflage defense puts them on their heels immediately. Included are three core drills for this defense. In a bonus section, the Camouflage and its teaching points are shown with players in a full court setting. Each pass, trap, deflection and player responsibility is analyzed. Two sets of strategies are used; one in the backcourt and one in the frontcourt.
2 DVDs - 128 minutes. 2008.
One of the best in my large collection. This is pretty much two different topics in one. The camouflage defense review is somewhat quick, but is still very good.
If you are a new coach you may find some good to it. Coach does a lot of explaining his system and how they build it. He also covers practice planning and how they develop their practices.
Not a lot on specifics of drill work.
Wouldhave been good if I had purchased 20 years ago when I started coaching.
Very solid and detailed dvd(s). Coach really gives a lot of insight into his overall approach and philosophy, as well as breaking down individual and team drills. My least favorite part was actually the 3-2 zone, but there was so much more there that it more than made up for it.
There are several specific ideas that I will take out of this and apply it to my high school team this year.
Loved this DVD, goes over his scramble as well. Good break down drills. Good way to disrupt other teams momentum or flow on offense.
Excellent. I have all of his videos and think this one is best.
I have been an AAU coach for the past of couple of years and am always looking for different things both offensively and defensively to help me as I continue to evolve as a coach. I can definitely say that his video is one that definitely helps. Coach L. does a great job of breaking down of how he manages his program from offense to defense to specials. The way he talks about drill progression and gives examples is exactly what I look for in coaching dvds. I have at least 60 coaching DVD"s in my collection and this is definitely in my top 5. You definitely get a bang for your buck with this DVD and then some. This video is a must have. Great job Championship Productions and Coach L. for putting together a great product.
This video was awesome! Of the 60 or so videos that I have ordered from Championship Productions, this one is right at the top. Coach Larranaga does an excellent job of explaining his program and philosophy. He goes over his practice plan, how he chooses his coaching staff, how they recruit, ect. Oh yeah, and he gives you 45 min. on the camouflage defense after all that. Great buy for any coach!
When I purchased this video, I assumed it was just on the Camouflage. This is actually a 2 disc DVD. The stuff on the Camouflage was outstanding. Coach Larranaga did a detailed job going over the defense and provided some great breakdown drills for the defense. A good part of this video features Coach Larranago going over many different aspects of his program, including practice planning, drills, and how he got rid of the losing culture at Mason when he took over. He was outstanding in this DVD and it was by far one of the best I have purchased over the years!
When I think of the work meticulous, I think of Coach Larranaga. In this video, he touches on a variety of coaching essentials: organization, philosophy, and instruction. I buy several hundred dollars in videos a year; this is the best one I've watched so far. Not to be too cliche, but, there is truly a little something in it for everybody. Specifically, I was looking for something different in a 3-2 zone; his camouflage is different, and it is a complement to his other man-to-man schemes. It is simple and apparently quite effective.
this is by far one of the best!!! i put this video in my top ten!!! and i have at least 150 videos...
I've been a successful college head coach for 11 years, watched a lot of videos, been to a lot of clinics, and other college practices. This video is worth more than what you pay for it. Larranaga obviously put a lot of thought into how he wanted to present the information and it shows. He goes into great detail. This video actually delivers on it's promises of giving you a comprehensive look at his leadership philosophy over a program.
