High Intensity Strength Training Volume 1: Theory and Application

with Michael Bradley,
Florida State University Men's Basketball Strength and Conditioning Coach

Michael Bradley has coached for over twenty years at the highest level of college athletics, training athletes at institutions including Stanford University, the University of Miami, and the United States Military Academy.

In Volume I of this strength training DVD series, Coach Bradley explains the theory of high intensity strength training, a system of training that integrates knowledge from the fields of physiology, biology, and physics to create reproducible results for all athletes. He also teaches the applications of the theory in the way he trains the Florida State basketball team.

Bradley's goal is getting results from strength training. Strength is not a skill, but working hard and developing strength is. The work ethic shown in his strength program correlates with the hard work players put in on the court to improve their game. The major point of emphasis is learning to train at the right intensity level.

If players are not training intensely enough they will not produce the best results from their training. Bradley is able to maximize their effort and greatly improve their strength in shorter workouts by demanding intense effort and focus from his players.

By constantly tracking progress and focusing on the perfect repetition, athletes are able to show strength increases workout to workout. Bradley explains how to get the absolute most out of your players using high intensity strength training techniques.

If you need a foundation for your strength and conditioning program or simply just need to perfect the structure, this DVD will teach you the philosophical framework of an extremely successful Division I program.

High Intensity Strength Training Volume 2: Exercise Protocols and Techniques

with Michael Bradley,
Florida State University Men's Basketball Strength and Conditioning Coach

Strength training and conditioning are an integral part of a great basketball team. By developing strength and muscle off the court, players can maximize their performance and reduce their risk of injury on the court.

In this basketball DVD, Michael Bradley takes you into the weight room to see the methods used in his high intensity strength training program. He walks you through the techniques and terminology of the proper ways to teach these protocols while presenting enumerable coaching points on extracting effort, coaching repetitions, equipment setup, use and design. This DVD addresses three distinct topics.

Pre-Exhaust
In the first segment, Coach Bradley explains a powerful training technique called Pre-Exhaust. This protocol trains around the weak link of an exercise in order to train the targeted muscles more intensely. By pre-fatiguing certain muscles, it creates a greater training intensity on less used muscles in compound joint exercise. This is such a powerful tool that Bradley says it is used in 30-40% of their routines.

Protocols
This segment focuses on advanced protocols that can be used to create intensity and variety in your routines. Topics addressed are cadence lifting and super slow or low momentum training, to both increase intensity and reduce force levels. These high tension, controlled repetitions are a great technique to train athletes who are coming off of injuries to get them stronger without rushing them back too quickly. He also demonstrates the even more powerful negative only training and several of its variations, but he advises that only coaches who are very experienced and trained use these techniques in large measures.

Knee Tendonitis
In the third segment he focuses on the knee, one of the most important joints to a basketball player. By working to strengthen the joint as well as the quadriceps, a player has a greater range of motion and a reduced likelihood of severe knee injury. He also addresses tendonitis, a common injury in basketball players. Coach Bradley teaches several protocols to strengthen the knee and muscles in this inflamed condition while minimizing the pain of the injury.

High Intensity Strength Training Volume 3: Organization and Implementation

with Michael Bradley,
Florida State University Men's Basketball Strength and Conditioning Coach

In this DVD, Coach Bradley builds upon the philosophical details of high intensity strength training presented in Volume 1 and the training protocols presented in Volume 2 to present ideas and the "nuts and bolts" of how to implement a successful strength and condition program.

Supervision and motivation are the biggest factors in the success of a training program. Florida State basketball players are coached on every repetition of each exercise. In addition, Coach Bradley teaches the athletes the art of strength coaching and the science of strength training, so that they can further grasp expectations and apply it later in life.

It is the responsibility of the strength coach to create an environment that makes the players want to train. An effective coach addresses the mental component of strength training by having players in a positive state of mind as soon as they step in the weight room.

The driving factor behind all training at Florida State basketball is the tracking and recording of progression. This close monitoring ensures that the players are getting stronger each day. It also minimizes overtraining, allowing the players to adapt and grow stronger while preventing injuries and avoiding unnecessary extra fatigue.

Progression is not the only topic discussed in this video. Coach Bradley gives in depth analysis of the following topics:

  • Intensity
  • Effort
  • Technique
  • Program Organization
  • Equipment
  • The Art of Strength Coaching
For any team needing a stellar set up for their strength training program this DVD is guaranteed to give you the foundation necessary for success.

High Intensity Strength Training Volume 4: Metabolic Conditioning and Manual Resistance Training

with Michael Bradley,
Florida State University Men's Basketball Strength and Conditioning Coach

If your team does not have a weight room or sufficient workout equipment, or if you are looking for an advanced training method to increase the intensity of your workouts, this DVD is perfect for you.

Florida State Strength and Conditioning Coach Michael Bradley demonstrates his successful manual resistance program, which greatly enhances your strength and requires very little equipment. In the second segment, you will see metabolic conditioning, a legendary part of Florida State Basketball's pre-season training. In the final segment, Coach Bradley addresses special considerations for training the important and vulnerable ankle and lower leg.

Manual Resistance Training
Manual resistance training, or partner assisted exercise, is a method of training in which the "spotter" is the one applying the resistance to the person training. This allows any team to train without equipment. Coach Bradley addresses the many subtleties and coaching points that make this a superior technique when applied properly, and a great way to add variety to your workouts. This type of training is not only great for improving strength, but it instills team values in the athletes by requiring constant coaching and communication between the lifter and the spotter.

Metabolic Conditioning
There is cardiovascular fitness and strength, but there is also a third level of training called "metabolic conditioning." In this extremely intense workout, Bradley takes a player through a strength training workout and a conditioning session combined. The routine is such that the athlete will perform ten strength training exercises interspersed with ten sprints in an 18 to 24 minute period. While viewing this brutally tough workout, keep in mind that all the fundamentals of high intensity strength training must be ingrained in your players beforehand. Metabolic conditioning will only work with a fairly rapid pace, all out sets, and controlled reps. This is the highest level of physical training, and is a great workout for any team that has time restraints; it builds strength, cardiovascular fitness, and metabolic conditioning in one session. Metabolic conditioning should only be used by athletes who are highly trained.

The Ankle and Lower Leg
In the third segment he focuses on the ankle, one of the most injured joints of basketball players. By working to strengthen the joint as well as the lower leg muscles, a player is more resilient to injury and capable of a faster recovery if hurt. Some unique and practical approaches to training this often overlooked part of the body are presented.
