2012 National Coach of the Year Frank Allocco, whose teams have given up less than 40 points per game over the past 10 years (that includes allowing just 34.48 points per game - with a shot clock - in 2011-12), shows you how to build a "team first" defensive mentality. Using this sequence of skills and drills will give your players a clear understanding of their expectations on defense.
Stance is critical, and like many fundamentals you have to work on it every day practice. Coach Allocco teaches and demonstrates his Form Drills which focus on building the technique for on-ball defense, denial, help side sag/traditional, and post stances. After showing the particular stance he demonstrates progressive drills to enhance the skill. These drills teach defenders to move their feet, which makes them harder to screen and discourages drives to the middle.
The Form Drills progress into drills that put players in game-like situations and end "live." Closeouts, shell defense, and ball screens are featured in these drills. You can use these drills to teach the skills required to build this style of man-to-man defense, making things tangible and achievable.
Communication is the basis for everything you'll do defensively. Allocco believes communication is vital to not only make the defense better but to help your players learn. Allocco shares the terminology he uses and demonstrates how effective it can be to defending the ball screen.
This video will give you a variety of ideas on how to stop and frustrate your opponent with defense by repeating the practice of good habits and aggressive play.
Produced at the Spring 2010 Wisconsin Dells (WI) clinic.
80 minutes. 2012.
I could only give this a 4 because Allocco really doesn''t explain his philosophy in full detail. He doesn''t talk about if his teams deny or drop to the line of the ball in certain areas. I would have liked to hear more about his thoughts on help side once it''s created. The drills are great, but I skip through his speech at the beginning - didn''t really find him that charismatic. If you are trying to find a man defensive philosophy that is aggressive and denys the wings this is it. Solid video.
I liked how coach Allocco projected his overall philosophy, along with his terrific drills.

Fantastic! Many great drills to build team defense. Loved the emphasis in discipline and communication. Many drills can be implemented right away in any practice. Coach''s philosophy is of practice and player development is great for all coaches to hear. Highly recommend.
Good tape - would recommend it.
Frank Allocco's DVD is awesome for any coach wishing to improve their defensive intensity. The drills he shows in the DVD are excellent and can be used by any high school coach who doesn't have a deep staff. The biggest highlight is all the teaching points he uses while he is introducing the drills. I can't wait to apply this to my practices the upcoming year!
This is the best DVD there is when your talking about teaching man to man defense from square one. There is a true emphasis on building from 1-0 into 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 1-2, 4-4 and 5-5 which you might say a lot of videos do, but the thoughtfulness of the information put together combined with the organization makes this really a perfect buy for anyone who wants to dissect how to really teach defense from the ground up. Add to the fact that Coach Allocco is one of the best out there and its a no brainer.
I have many DVD's on defense but this is the best. Coach Allocco has many good ideas on getting your players to communicate.
This video is a great buy! Coach Allocca really goes above and beyond in this video on his defensive philosophy and has many great drills that I cannot wait to implement in the upcoming season. He starts with teaching about a good defensive stance, then moves into one on one drills, perimeter defense, post defense and then goes into 3v3 and 5v5 drills.
He really does a great job of teaching each drill and explaining why he uses them. I would highly recommend this drill for any high school/middle school coach looking to improve on their team on the defensive end.
