Description

with Frank Allocco,
De La Salle (CA) HS Head Coach;
2014 McDonald's All-American Game West Squad Head Coach;
2x State Champions (only coach in California history to take two schools to a state title);
2000 National High School Coach of the Year; 2nd All-Time in the State of California in Winning Percentage;

Constant development is what creates competitive basketball programs, giving players the skills and techniques they need to compete at the next level.

In this clinic presentation, Frank Allocco goes over his methods for developing high school players so that they can compete at the highest level of high school basketball and, for some, the opportunity to play at the college level.

Coach Allocco begins by explaining his philosophy of "More Reps, No Regrets." This highlights how important it is for players to maximize their reps throughout their high school career. You will see group and individual development drills that Allocco uses in his every day practice to develop his players. These drills offer coaches the ability to teach:

  • Proper form and technique while dribbling, shooting and attacking the rim
  • The use of angles and footwork to put your defenders at a disadvantage
  • The importance of developing a complete basketball game to avoid `being stuck'
  • One-on-one moves to beat defenders from the triple-threat stance
  • How to be a more effective offensive player `off-the-catch'
  • And more.
GROUP DEVELOPMENT SERIES
To maximize development time, Allocco shows team-oriented drills that produce a competitive, energetic, and fun atmosphere and promote higher levels of intensity. The drills include:
  • Two-Ball Dribbling Series to engage a higher level of concentration and dexterity
  • One-Hand Form Shooting to teach form, technique and appropriate range˙
  • Box Shooting Series to teach players how to shoot from a stationary, off the ball, and off the dribble position by using techniques such as the inside pivot, lift fake move, dribble-ins, dribble-outs, shot off a close-out, and on-ball screen and shot.
INDIVUDAL PERIMETER MOVES
Both posts and guards must learn moves from the perimeter to develop a well-rounded game. Allocco uses the `one second window of opportunity' and the `rip, read, and roar' technique to teach one-on-one perimeter moves. In addition, he demonstrates how to:
  • Use jabs, faints and fakes to get your defender off-balance for a `one second window of opportunity'
  • Use moves such as `jab and shoot', `jab and go', `jab and crossover' and the `rocker step' to build an arsenal of effective break down moves
  • Teach drills such as 1 on 1 from half-court, the top of the circle, the wing and baseline to develop moves from all perimeter positions
INDIVIDUAL POST MOVES
Allocco transitions into post play teaching all players how to use:
  • The hook shot, the jump hook, the drop step baseline, and the turnaround jump shot to dominate the paint
  • The `catch, chin and check it' technique to develop proper habits while making post moves
  • In addition to these drills, Allocco demonstrates how these skills can be applied to game situations by progressing into 2 on 2 play; whereby players must incorporate these techniques to produce scoring chances.
Spending time developing your players breeds improvement and confidence within your program. It is a constant race to repetition, and the teams who perform the most repetitions per season achieve the highest levels of success.

The drills Coach Allocco demonstrates in this presentation have helped him send over 50 players to the college ranks. Apply these drills to your practice and watch as your players' progress to the next level!

Excellent! Every coach should have all of Frank Allocco's videos. How many people can say they had both Ara Parseghian and Digger Phelps as coaches?

Its good to see another video from Coach Allocco, Bay Area coaches all know what De La Salle is about and this gives you a peek into how they do it. There's a good ball handling progression, really good shooting drills along with 1 on 1 post and perimeter progressions. The information is solid, perhaps not groundbreaking, but there's also a good amount of practice and development philosophy that makes this a really valuable video in your library. Recommended.

I received this video not really knowing what to expect but after watching it I would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for some off season improvement drills. This video teaches players how to handle the ball and become a really good player with the basketball in their hands. I think all coaches should look into buying this video if they run any type of off season development program.
