Flip Saunders: Match-Up Zone Defense and Special Drills, Part I & II

Coach Saunders does a great job in this dvd. If you are into running a match up zone this DVD is a must.

What a great video!! Coach Saunders keeps the rules simple and easy to follow, allowing the players to get the concepts right away. He demonstrates all the different formations and how to defend the cutters extremely well. Mostly a very thorough video but I would have liked more time on the pick & roll rotations. Overall I give this 5 stars.

Very well done- thorough. He covers how to defend different offensive alignment and different cuts/actions.

I go back and forth on what rating to give this one having watched it twice now. I'm going with the 4 instead of the 3 because of the amount of material combined with the sound teaching. The zone itself reminds me a lot of the Don Meyer PAT zone except there is no center and forwards become very important to covering space. There are some soundly taught rules to it but really there isn't much to this "zone", which is much closer to a switching man system to me then anything else. Certainly the rules Coach Saunders plays by dictates its going to be different then zones the vast majority of us see, which is also a reason why this system probably should be kept at the NBA level. There are a few really good drills I thought, I have never found a way to really get good at shooting gaps when defending off ball screens and this tape shows a really nice way to do it along with practice it. Just like the other Cotton Fitzsimmons tapes this one is also really long and packed with a lot of little nuggets that are helpful to hear. Overall its good, I'd like to see Coach Saunders present on a different topic then a "zone" that is best suited to the pro level.

This is all really good information, but it is not progressed and divided as well as it should be. There are things half way through the video that should have been used to lead it off, there are segments that aren't explained very well and . This is one that has to be watched multiple times to really have a handle on understanding everything that is gone over and watched even more to be comfortable teaching it in my opinion. This might be the case with the majority of videos out there, but it could have been presented so much more efficiently then it was. It is still very good and worth checking out, love all the little coaching details and the drills at the end that don't necessarily correlate to the matchup.

Great Dvd very detailed. Basically a 1-2-2 with ALL CUTTERS accounted for. Great teacher.

This video is simply the most informative resource I've found on the 1-2-2 match-up zone. Saunders does a great job of explaining the rules, showing several different looks that an offense may throw at the defense. I would highly recommend this video!!

Great Video for those looking to add some spice to your traditional zone or a great compliment to your man defense. Coach Saunders does a excellent job teaching the basic principals of the zone and giving teaching points for special situation that haunt most zone teams. Coach Saunders does a great job showing how this true "match-up" zone can mirror your man principals and, if played correctly, can sometimes be hard to tell the difference between your man and this zone!! This is the zone to play for all of us DIE HARD man coaches!!

Flip Saunders is a great coach and presents this defense very well. We run this defense about 20% of the time and it absolutely makes our Man to man help and recovery better. Also, is a great defense for forcing players to talk. Love the DVD!

When you like to learn about the 1-2-2 match up you will get very much information presented in a clear and logical way. Saunders knows what he teaches and has a clear eye for the details that can make this defense work. He not only demomstrates in detail how the defense reacts to several different situations, he also shares lots of drills to build the different parts. As a dessert you get some very nice drills and insights on trapping, defending the downscreen, contest&rebound and fastbreak. Well worth the price!

Good overview of the basic principles, with good examples of different situations. Well presented.

All matchup defenses have some basic similarities, but some are designed to be too smart for their own good. Saunders has developed a simple 1-2-2 matchup that he uses at the NBA level. In the 90+ minutes of this video, Saunders gives the basic slides and responsibilities. He then goes through defending numerous cut, pick and roll, and allignment possibilities. All in all one of the better matchup zone dvds I have seen.

So, did you actually purchase and watch this dvd, or are you just not a fan of Flip Saunders.
