If your team is without a dominant post player and you need an effective offense to utilize the players you have, this video is for you! The High Post Offense is a great offense, utilizing guards and undersized post players with great success and creates spacing, works against pressure defense, has many options, and is limited only by your imagination. Coach Altman shows you his base set for running the offense, shows you the correct positioning, movements, and cuts. He then goes into different set plays you can run out of the offense to utilize different strengths you may have or exploit potential weaknesses your opponent may have. Altman ends the tape by showing you different ways to run a delay game when time is critical and shows you different ways of transitioning into the offense from a fastbreak. Excellent instruction!
75 minutes. 2005.
Al McGuire called this offense the "Mosquito Offense" in his booklet and I suggest we do the same to differentiate it from other high post offenses. Perhaps a more descriptive name would be the Marquette/Michigan Double Shuffle Cut Pinch Post Offense but that obviously is too long. So, per Al McGuire the "Mosquito Offense" it is.
Coach Altman runs a double shuffle cut offense with a high pinch post at the opposite elbow for a 2-man game which usually produces a shot. If no shot is taken, the pattern is repeated from the other side. It is definitely a structured continuity pattern offense originating from a 2-3 high set and creates an overload. Some would call it a 4 Out/1 In offense but there is no freedom of movement. (Coaches have different definitions of what "motion" means.) Assistant coaches Hank Raymonds and Rick Majerus developed this offense for Al McGuire who used it to win the 1977 national championship at Marquette. (They may have gotten the idea from Ed Jucker at Cincinnati.) Johnny Orr used it at Michigan and Iowa State with success and shared the offense with Dana Altman who implemented it at Creighton with success. Coach Altman is a fine coach who has used this continuity pattern much of his career. He knows it well and often speaks on it at coaching clinics. This restrictive continuity pattern will not be to everyone''s taste but it is unique and does fit a team that lacks height.
I gave this DVD a 5 star rating. Coach Altmann does a great job of teaching this offense and showing off the options. Another reason why I gave this DVD a high rating because we put this offense in this summer with our girls high school summer program, just to have another offense and because we had zero height. Well the girls really like the ease of this offense, especially against zones. Summer league, we went 8-0. Once the season (2013) started the girls asked if we were going to use the "Duck" offensive system again. Now in the summer we had zero height and limited players talent wise. The season started we had height and more talent; shooters and drivers. We r running this offensive system and we are 6-0 and scoring on average 65 pts a game!! Talent helps but this high post offense allows my least talented players a chance to score some buckets. Great DVD because coach explains things in simple form. You can run it against zones, mostly the 2--3 zone. We ran this offense against a 1--3-1 zone and our wing shooter was crushing jumpers from beyond the 3point line as well as mid-rangemidrange jumpers....talent helps. But this is a great DVD becausecause of the ease of teaching and instruction.
Watched Coach Altman at the IBCA clinic explain his Wheel Offense. We implemented it this offense because we have no height (6'1 is our big man). Coach does a great job of explaining and this offense is only as limited as your imagination. Worth the buy.
Ok for structured offenses but unusable for continuity/motion.
Good structured approach to high post offense. Not really helpful if you run a continuity motion type offense.
