with Bruiser Flint, Drexel University Head Coach;
4x CAA Coach of the Year

Instilling a defensive mentality is essential to a team's success. Defensive stops can feed the offense, and the ability to consistently stop an opponent will ensure that your team is in every game down to the end.

Year after year, Bruiser Flint's teams have been among the best defensive teams in the nation. In this basketball DVD, Coach Flint will walk you through the process of building a successful team defense that will give you an opportunity to win more games.

Flint progresses from defending 1-on-1 to 5-on-5. From proper stance and movement to drills that initiate communication, he provides a framework for building a defense that will lower the field goal percentage of any offense. To illustrate that framework, Coach Flint breaks his presentation down into six areas:

  • Body Stance and Motion - Execute a proper defensive stance focusing on ball pressure, hand placement, shadowing, and denying the line of sight by the ball handler. Proper defensive stance can accomplish many tasks simultaneously, from forcing the ball handler off balance, to denying sight lines, passing lanes and driving lanes.
  • Lunges - This drill teaches your players proper footwork for lateral movement on defense. They will learn how to properly lift and push-step their feet in order to stay in front of their defenders.
  • Closeouts - Learn to close out while utilizing correct angles, pivots, and hand placement in order to both deny a perimeter jump shot and prevent driving opportunities.
  • Shell Drill - Build your team defense first by learning the proper angle of stance and how to help teammates. You can also work on baseline drives, screen downs, stopping a drive from any angle, and work on your closeouts.
  • Guarding Screens - Guard against the various screens that are in most offenses (flex, fade, ball, etc) and teach the footwork to better guard screens, decoy action and the different positions on the floor from which they occur.
  • Series Defense - See how Coach Flint teaches his players to defend three different types of cuts a day. You'll also see how to incorporate the shell drill into a scouting method for making sure that future opponents are efficiently covered in pregame walk-through and practices.
Each drill is explained thoroughly and is taught in a sequential method. In each drill, Flint talks about what he is looking for and why he has his points of emphasis.

Included in the video is a question and answer section in which Flint discusses how he addresses different parts of an opponent's offense. Flint shows you how to reduce the amount of time you spend on your pre-game walk through, giving your players confidence in what your doing defensively.

This is a great DVD. Coach Flint clearly explains on the ball footwork and goes into detail his off the ball defense. I love his phrases and the simplicity of his defensive approach. The section on screening situations is very well done.
