A 2010 inductee to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Hurley has won 25 state titles, three high school national championships, is a two time national coach of the year, and has over 900 career victories. More than 100 athletes have earned Division I basketball scholarships playing for Hurley, and five have been first-round picks in the NBA Draft.
BUILDING A HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM:Coach Hurley takes you through his coaching philosophy and provides an outline into what you need to be thinking about when building your high school program. Everything from developing your style of play to building a feeder system to cultivating an identity for your team is covered. He describes what he calls the keys to a successful program. These eight keys include having an emphasis on fundamentals, physical fitness, playing hard, as well as his "WIN" stats. In the last section, Hurley takes you step-by-step through his team's basketball contract that his players and their parents have to sign. These 18 points cover various items both on and off the basketball court.
PRACTICE PLANNING AND DRILLS:In this DVD presentation, Coach Hurley takes you through his thoughts and philosophy as it pertains to practice planning. The eight areas cover everything from practice set up, using the clock effectively, having 30 second "quick meets" during practice just as a timeout in a game to make sure you practice special situations every day. On the court, Hurley shares more than 15 of his favorite practice drills that he uses with his teams. These drills include both half court and full court drills that work on the fundamentals of passing, catching, moving, shooting as well as individual and team defense drills, rebounding drills, and team shooting.
Coach Hurley is not only one of the top coaches in the country but he is also one of the toughest. But his demanding style has helped his players accomplish many things both on and off the basketball court. Take these new ideas, concepts and drills to help you not only run a more effective practice but also help you build a successful basketball program.
150 minutes. 2011.
I found Coach Hurley talks way too much throughout the whole series and leaves a lot to the imagination. There are some good nuggets available of information however, I would tend to steer a novice coach away from this set and point them in the direction of Sherri Coale or Geno Auriemma. While being a great communicators and entertaining, they both consistently use players to demonstrate the drill or concept being taught, which is a big help in explaining to your own team. The big sticking point for me with this DVD and the rest of the Coach Hurley set is that it comes across as a monologue that points you in a direction and a few of the suggestions simply aren't feasible.
One of the better DVD's I have gotten so many good drills and thoughts definitely a keeper
This is the best video of the series in my opinion, all the drills are very good and the program philosophy segment is also very helpful. There are drills that stand out for rebounding, passing and catching along with transition offense and defense. I liked also how a segment of drills only needed a half court, really good for coaches who are somewhat limited by facilities. Overall excellent information, one to watch.
I would say this is a must have for high school coaches. Coach Hurley provides tons of drills for just about every game scenario. I even loved the warm-up drills that he provided that I plan on using in our pre-game. His advice on building a program is very valuable. One of the best videos I have purchased from Championship Productions.
Great video. Coach Hurley shows a lot good drills in the first part of the video. The second part is about program development which includes everything from feeder system to team rules to his keys to success. I learned a lot.
