Coach Huggins' teams are known for their aggressive, no nonsense approach to playing the game. This DVD focuses on pressure defense and how Huggins' teams have always thrived on pressuring the opponent. Pressure defense starts with an emphasis on guarding the ball, steering the ball and putting the ball in areas for trapping purposes. The box theory states that the ball is pushed to a side, therefore making the size of the box smaller. The smaller the box, the less area there is to defend. The middle lane of the floor is known as "the Shoot." It is extremely important that the defense keeps the ball out of this area of the floor. Once the offense gets it in the middle, all players are one pass away. Another major part of this defensive philosophy is creating pressure by playing on the line of the ball. Huggins teaches his players to make passes go "over or under" you but never through you. Defending the dribble and playing one pass away are necessary fundamentals in this system. The 2-on-2 Sprint to Help Drill incorporates many of the important teaching points, including high hands, spacing and angles and the closeout. Coach Huggins' teams are known for their aggressive, no nonsense approach to playing the game. Huggins ability to get the most out of his players is legendary and words like fierce, intense, and physical describe his teams. This DVD focuses on how an intense, competitive practice environment can carry over for teams that are challenged every day. He attributes much of his success to developing a competitive spirit on the practice floor and shares his ideas how he accomplishes this every season. Huggins introduces the transition drill that begins every practice. A 2-on-1 transition is followed by a 3-on-2 break, then a 4-on-3 fast break. This drill progresses into a 4-on-3, 5-on-4 and 5-on-5 situation. Another drill is 4-on-4 plus 1, which puts pressure on the defense and forces them to talk, help and work hard. These drills address the philosophy that the offense cannot "pass through us," meaning that direct passes lead to scores. While incorporating this idea into drills, your team becomes a better defensive unit. A similar drill is the 4-on-4 plus 1 alternate. The 3-on-3 drill helps put all defensive concepts together in a competitive setting. The offense works to penetrate and score or pitch, which puts tremendous pressure on the defenders. Huggins talks through his philosophy on the floor as he takes players through a tough screening drill that reinforces concentration, communication and physical defensive play. Keys are to slide through screens "third man," take the shortest distance, and refuse to be screened. This DVD paves a path for your team to become better by making practice more competitive.
