Coach Billy Donovan has mastered the pick and roll offense, which has led to back-to-back NCAA championships, and has begun to duplicate itself in hundreds of gyms across the country. He begins by exploring the philosophy and building of this effective attack, starting with the flat pick and roll by a post player at the top of the key. He teaches the flat option 5-on-0, then shows it in action 5-on-5. Multiple opportunities to score come from this one concept in the half court. Major teaching points in the offense include: reads, slipping, spacing and screening angles. Real game situations are presented to help coaches anticipate their opponent's strategies when playing the pick and roll offense. Donovan has discovered three main ways the pick and roll is defended in college, and instructs the offense how to counter every move, including the switch and double team trap. When attacking the defensive 'show,' Donovan teaches the slip or ball reversal. This offense forces the defense to get back in transition and match up quickly, constantly close out and contain penetration. Every defensive adjustment to the pick and roll can be countered by the pick and roll.
62 minutes. 2007.
Decent amount of information here, he goes into some detail about different ball screen angles and also goes a bit into how you counter some of the way the defense will play you. If you are buying this DVD just to get something that''s completely fluid and teaches pure continuity and flows into the continuity of the offense, you might be a bit disapointed. If you are looking for a DVD that gives you a starting point with some good insight and depth into a PnR offense, this is a solid buy. I just wish he showed the offense in its entirety and showed the different ways they continue the action after multiple tries. You will have to go back and watch the cuts and passes his NATL teams did in order to get the complete picture with the offense
great ball screen dvd. a little general but still good
I was disappointed with this video. A bit too general without specific drills and concepts that would be helpful
An excellent discussion of the spread pick and roll offense although some of the options are a little complicated and would take a tremendous amount of practice time at the high school level.
Great video and a good addition to any coaches collection on using the ball screen offense for the college or high school level.
The presentation was good but wasn't exactly what I was looking for in the pick and roll. I was looking for drills that that taught the action but I did pick up some good information, just not what I was looking for.
Excellent video - great demonstrations and explanations. Can see why his team executes the ball screens so well. Will definitely use some of his ideas next season.
The Donovan Product was helpful but I was really looking for specifics on training big men the basics of setting great pick and rolls. The movements after they set the picks. This did not help give me the basics I really wanted but it did help my offensive movements.
I really enjoyed this dvd. I have seen a lot of Gator basketball games under Donovan so I knew many of these concepts, but he breaks down the intricacies of each concept and all the scoring options without calling an actual "play".
I think Donovan really presented a lot of information which might overwhelm some coaches, but I really like the way he teaches and I think the DVD is great!! I like it better than the Larry Brown DVD.
