Bill Self focuses on seven principles for effective zone offense and teaches you the Jayhawks' "basic" and "motion" 3-Out 2-In Zone Offense. Coach Self walks you through the necessary techniques of both the perimeter and post players such as quick ball movement, skip passing, lob passing, utilizing the short corner and using high/low motion. Self also demonstrates drills that any coach at any level can use to enhance the continuity in the zone offense. He discusses responsibilities and reads and demonstrates the cuts, screens and movement for every position. As a bonus, Self also includes a handful of quick-hitter plays and out-of-bounds baseline plays that are guaranteed to work against any zone! This instructional video is the ultimate guide to running a zone offense. Coach Self's teaching methods, techniques and principles allow any coach at any level to implement the Jayhawk zone offense.
70 minutes. 2005.
This is a very good zone offense tape overall, some simple concepts that work very well. I really loved the crackdown, I have never seen that before but could easily picture it adding another dimension to zone attacks. The other thing I really liked was out of "Stationary" as Coach Self calls it, you really drill the easiest ways to get shots and movement against zone offense. This video doesn't get a 5 from me because it acts as more of a base than a true blueprint of Coach Selfs zone system. There are a few basic quick hitters and some BLOB stuff but nothing great. I preferred the Auriemma video but this is essentially the same offense with a few minor differences. Overall a good video to look at for bigger teams or a good starter zone offense.
Good DVD. Well presented. I will definitely take some of the ideas and incorporate them into my coaching. I am glad I bought this DVD, but I preferred the Kermit Davis DVD on zone offenses better. It was more encompassing.
Good dvd. Self did a very good job of showing how to teach his idea.
Very helping teaching points throughout. Self simplifies the concepts of zone offense vs. a 2-3 zone. The movement is dictated by what the post players do. He also shows BLOB plays and a play vs. triangle and two. He does not show how he would adjust the offense if facing an odd front defense though.
Self provides lots of adjustments that can help coaches get their best players the ball where they can score. For example, he shows a play for getting your non-shooting pg in position to feed the low post, and uses post screens to open up shooters outside.
One aspect of this offense with which I struggle is the heavy emphasis on lob passes, which is something my teams haven't done in the past.
Very useful, easy to understand, easy to apply. Best DVD I have seen for attacking a 2 - 3 Zone.
Great Zone Offense DVD. Coach Self did an excellent job of simplifying his zone concepts. Very easy to teach any BB at any level.
I enjoyed this dvd. The crackdown concept is something I will be incorporating in my high-low zone offense. Zone offense is not about fancy tricks, it is about basic spacing and ball movement, which Self demonstrates in this dvd.
Is a good DVD for attacking zones. The crackdown situation is great for teams that have long athletic post players. Great DVD!
i like this zone dvd better than the kermit dvd. ball movement is emphasized more and it is straight forward.
