2008 AP National Coach of the Year award winner Keno Davis invites you to his first three practices of the 2012-13 season to prepare for a summer basketball trip. Coach Davis takes you through two practices geared towards preparing his players for the season and a Central Michigan Coaches Clinic. He outlines their offensive and defensive philosophies; fast break game, rebounding emphasis, and zone break downs on both the offensive and defensive end.
Practice 1:Coach Davis introduces a variety of drills that will help build transition offense and defense. He uses a simple 2-on-0 and 2-on-1 drill to emphasize catching the ball in transition and finishing strong around the rim. From there, he builds the transition game into 5-on-0 segments where his players sprint the floor and look to finish in transition or move right into their motion offense and how to they break a press.
You'll see how they use technology in practice by having his players watch film from the previous day's practice session. He outlines their use of stats and how important it is to get yourself better each day in practice if you want to be good and play more.
Watch how Davis takes full advantage of his practice space and time during his station break out session that focuses on offense, defense and rebounding. These small learning segments focus on cutting to the hoop, using effective pump fakes and finishing around the rim.
Defense is another key area addressed in this practice. Whether it's working on defensive principles such as stunt and recover, ball pressure or help-the-helper, you will get a great look at how to keep your players engaged in practice at all times. Coach finishes with a 5-on-5 break out session where they work offensively on their cutters and quick hitters.
Practice 2:As the players come back for a second session, you get a look at how Coach Davis develops his players individually with pre-practice break-out drills. These drills allow his players to get up lots of shots at game spots within their offense. He puts his post players through a challenging workout in order to build their intensity level for practice.
Bringing the team back together, Davis begins to implement their offense, defense, and fast break play. He demonstrates 5-on-0 and 5-on-5 segments where his players review their offensive principles. During the 5-on-5 segments, he focuses on perfecting his offensive sets and motion offense against a live defense. He wants his players to be able to execute a play when the defense knows the play is coming.
You will get a great look at how to utilize your assistants in practice so that your players get a different perspective of your offensive and defensive concepts.
Practice 3:In this third installment of All Access Practice, Keno Davis and the Central Michigan University's Chippewas take the court for a coaches clinic. Coach runs through a typical practice, but opens up the floor for more explanation of why they run a certain drills, offensive plays, or defensive match-ups.
Coach Davis brings out the stat board they use in practice and goes over every stat you can use to show your players how they are playing in practice. This gives them the ability to explain why a player isn't playing as much or how a player can improve to earn more playing time.
With each drill they do, Davis talks about points of emphasis, things to watch for, and how to correct mistakes during the drill. He takes full advantage of the scrimmages in the half court to make his players play with passion and intensity. Whether it's describing the use of pads during a finishing drill, breaking down the reasoning and responsibilities of their 3-2 zone defense, or walking you through several offensive series such as cutters and out of bounds sets, he makes you think about how to organize your practice time to become an effective coach and teacher on the court.
He finishes with a question and answer session outlining his philosophy and teaching on rebounding, fast break responsibilities, press and press break principles, and their main half court motion offense that combines the flex and triangle offensive principles.
