AAU Coaching Girls Basketball Series: Full and Half Court Team Defense

Sherri Coale delivers an amazing defensive DVD that will expose you and your players to a wide variety of defensive systems. You will gain a basic understanding of defensive systems and you're sure to find one that will fit your team's defensive strengths.

Man-to-Man Defense
Build your man-to-man defensive principles using a variety of live ball reaction drills and a mirror drill that will train your players to guard a basic cutter, the jab step, a change of direction move, or a dead ball situation. Jumping to the ball, defensive close-out technique, ball screen defense and a basic defensive stance are all explained and drilled.

Use Coale's 1-on-0 closeouts and full court closeouts to make sure your players have the proper hand up to contest a shot and are able and ready to slide in front of any player who puts the ball on the floor.

Learn the basic ball-you-man relationship your players must have to be successful whether they are 1, 2, or 3 passes away from the ball. Teach your players how to defend a variety of different cuts and dribble penetrations from every angle on the floor using a 3-on-3 and 4-on-4 shell drill. This all builds up to a 5-on-5 shell drill that incorporates all of the man defense skills.

Zone, Trapping, and Junk Defense
Coale demonstrates how to play a 2-3 zone, 3-2 zone, and a 1-3-1 trapping zone in the half court setting - and reminds coaches how important it is to use man principles when playing a zone.

Need to turn up the pressure? Coale shows you how to run a full court zone trap. Whether it's a diamond-and-1 or 2-2-1 press, you can force your opponents to catch the ball in dangerous territory and lock them down with two defenders. She also shows you how to use your interceptors and safety to create uncertainty for the trapped ball handler.

Coale also provides an overview of the triangle-and-2 or box-and-1 defense to help you shut down that offensive star that is killing you.

Post Defense
In order to build a successful defense, you have to have a strong post presence. Coach Coale outlines how to effectively build a great post defender and how to trap in the post.
