Description

with Kevin O'Neill,
University of Southern California (USC) Head Coach
former University of Arizona Interim Head Coach

Coach O'Neill has coached at every level of basketball, from high school to the NBA. He believes that fundamentals help players get better, which makes the team better and leads to more wins. His passing drills are done with an emphasis on passing and catching with two hands and two eyes. Eight passing drills combine technique with in game type situations. The hand off is taught in the half court and is becoming a big part of the game. O'Neill introduces the half court passing drill, a combination of passing, shooting and cutting. O'Neill's shooting drills start with the elbow pin-down with and without dribble and he adds the catch and sweep, fade cut and shot, dribble pull up, curl shot and shot fake and shoot. He includes the backboard tip, Mikan drill, full speed lay-ups, baseline power move, middle drives, crossover drives, elbow spin dribble, hand off and lay-up, pull up shot, hesitation dribble, behind the back and the crossover dribble.

53 minutes. 2008.

The well-traveled Kevin O'Neill smoothly coaches skilled players through individual and small group shooting drills good for summer workouts with built-in conditioning. Many of the drills use the coach as a passer. (A manager, friend or dear ol' dad could serve this role as a passer.) There is just one group rebounding tip drill. There are no defensive drills or team competitions. There are no passing or dribbling drills separate from producing a scoring move. Every drill ends with a shot. There are some insightful coaching pointers for players but specific, detailed fundamental techniques are not taught from the ground up such as hand placement or back spin on the ball because the skilled players in this video do not need that type of instruction. The tight three-player weave is the best way to introduce that drill so it is easily grasped without a comedy of errors. This video is well-produced by Five-Star basketball except for a mirror in the distant background which only mildly distracted me once. The player demonstrations are effective and it flows quickly. The expertise of Coach O'Neill made all these drills look easy to teach to the players. It is a good solid satisfactory video, but not fabulous. Do shooting drills for individual and partner improvement need to be fabulous? IMHO, this is not a catch-all, stand-alone video so I cannot give it high marks but I am satisfied with what's there. I was surprised that it did not include any form shooting, free throw shooting, low post feeds or 1-1 action. If it had more variety I would have moved it up a notch.
